Jurisdiction boundaries, Bilateral relations, Indonesia and PalauAbstract
The jurisdictional boundaries of coastal and archipelagic states are internationally determined based on UNCLOS 1982. However, in its application, there are still perceptions between several countries such as Indonesia and Palau. This is an important issue that affects bilateral relations between the two countries, especially in the context of international law. Although Indonesia and Palau both recognize UNCLOS as a guideline, there are differences in the delimitation methods used to determine the boundaries of the
Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Indonesia applies the proportionality method, while Palau uses the equidistance method, which causes overlapping maritime areas. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method, collecting data through
literature reviews and interviews with international legal experts. The results of the analysis show that more intensive diplomatic dialogue, reference to international law, and the option of resolving disputes through arbitration are needed to reach an agreement. In addition, bilateral cooperation in the economic and environmental fields can create a more conducive atmosphere. This study is expected to contribute to a better understanding of maritime boundary issues in the Southeast Asian region and encourage
peaceful and constructive resolution.
