Abstract

Bathymetric surveys using the Multibeam Echosounder can produce data with coverage up to a full 100% of the seabed surface, so that the resulting depth information can be presented in its entirety in depicting the bathymetry in a body of water. Currently, using numerical formulations, we are able to extract backscatter bathymetric acoustic data for interpretation into classification data for seabed types, such as fine to coarse sediment material and soft, coarse and hard sediment material. The aim of this research is to utilize Multibeam Echosounder bathymetry data to extract backscatter values and classify sediment types for zoning bottom water types. The results of backatter extraction values for bathymetric data obtained intensity values for the sand sediment type of -15 to -10 dB (diameter ± 0.61 mm) at a depth of <30 m and rock (coral) of more than -4 to -3 dB at a depth of <20 m (diameter > 4.30 mm). Next, the backscatter extraction results were validated with sediment data based on substrate and sediment grain diameter with sediment type classification using the Shepard Triangle. From these results, we can interpret the type of seabed substrate in detail according to the type of sediment in the form of a sediment distribution map in the research area.
