Supporting Components of National Defense, Marginal, Coastal and Island Communities

Abstract

Coastal and island communities are marginalized groups of people (people with limited access to various matters related to livelihoods) among Indonesian society in general. This marginality was formed as a result of the Dutch colonial heritage which realized the high potential for struggle within the maritime society of the Archipelago in the past. This high struggle arises because working at sea requires strength, togetherness and unity. Therefore, in the midst of these limitations, coastal and island communities are one of the supporting components in the national defense effort that adheres to the universal people's defense
system. In order to prepare them as a component of national defense, strategic steps must be formulated starting with alleviating living standards to a better level, especially in terms of the economy. With an increase in the economy, their horizons of thought will be more open so that the hope of making the 120 million Indonesians living in coastal and island areas a supporting component of national defense can be realized.
